VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. It's a volunteer based program that provides FREE tax preparation to households earning $50,000 or less. All volunteers are trained and certified through the Internal Revenue Service.
Understanding VITA
VITA is an IRS sponsored program that began with the Tax Reform Act of 1969. The volunteer-based program provides FREE tax assistance to households earning $50,000 or less annually. Not only does it help individuals save money on tax preparation, it also offers education on two important federal tax credits - the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit- which too often go unclaimed.
VITA's Impact on the Chattahoochee Valley
VITA returned $3.3 million dollars in federal refunds back to residents of the Chattahoochee Valley in 2011, while saving taxpayers approximately $400,000 in tax preparation fees.
How Fast Will I Get my Return?
All VITA sites in the Chattahoochee Valley offer electronic filing. This means your tax return is sent electronically to the IRS the same day it's prepared. If you include your bank account number and routing number on the tax return, you can have your refund is just 7-10 days!
Are there other VITA Sites?
Yes there are sites across the country. To locate one of them, call the IRS at 1-800-906-9887 or view a listing online. NOTE: Not all VITA sites are represented on this online list.
Military personnel and their families get free tax help TOO!
The military has its own VITA program because there are very special
and specific tax laws for those in the Armed Services. For more information
