VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. It's a volunteer based program that provides FREE tax preparation to households earning $50,000 or less. All volunteers are trained and certified through the Internal Revenue Service.

If any of the following apply to you, take the appropriate documentation:
- Child care expenses: bring the name, address, and tax ID number or Social Security
number of the provider PLUS a copy of all expenses paid in 2011.
- Mortgage company statements: 1098
- Property tax documents
- Adoption expenses
- Alimony paid or received
- Notices from IRS or state tax office
- College tuition and student loan interest statements: 1098T or 1098E
- Any 1099 for retirement earnings, dividends paid, interest earned etc.
- Additional forms of income such as: prizes and awards, scholarships and fellowships, lottery
gambling winnings.
If you lost or do not have all of these items, you can still get your taxes prepared. However, you must first call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to find out what you need to do and how to obtain replacement documents.
